How it works
EAN-13 uses thirteen digits, where the last digit validates the first twelve. The barcode consists of a fixed 95-module pattern plus quiet margins.
This tool draws a barcode but does not issue licensed product numbers. For retail use, check GS1 requirements and test that printed labels scan correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the number automatically registered for retail products?
No. The tool does not issue or register official GTIN identifiers.
Which file can I download?
An SVG image, which can be resized and should be tested with a scanner before printing.
EAN-13 check digits and product identifiers
EAN-13 encodes 13 decimal digits, including a final check digit. Enter 12 digits to let the tool calculate the check digit, or 13 digits to validate an existing number. The resulting SVG barcode is generated in the browser.
Creating a graphic does not allocate a registered GTIN or establish any product ownership. For commercial product identification, follow the applicable GS1 registration and number assignment rules before using a barcode.
EAN-13 check digit example
Enter 400638133393 (12 digits) to calculate the final check digit 1, forming 4006381333931. To validate a full 13-digit code, enter all 13 digits; an invalid check digit is rejected. The final digit detects many common data-entry errors but does not prove that a product identifier is officially assigned.
Are EAN-13 and UPC-A identical?
No. They are related barcode systems but have different digit lengths and use cases. This utility produces the EAN-13 format only; it does not generate UPC-A or register new retail numbers with GS1.
Can I print the SVG directly on a product?
The SVG is an illustration of a valid encoding pattern. Before commercial use, confirm that the GTIN is legitimately assigned, follow your print supplier's quiet-zone and size requirements, and test readability on physical labels.
After generating a barcode
If you are preparing a small product catalog, the CSV to JSON converter can transform product rows into structured text without uploading data. To compare packaging and quantities before setting a retail price, try the unit price calculator. Neither tool assigns GS1 identifiers.
